Gradwell Internet for business people

How to configure mail forwarding and mailboxes

Getting started

You will need to create a mail forwarding rule for each email address you wish to use, so the mail system knows where to send mail received for your domain.

Basic configuration

You will need to create a mailbox for each address you require, then you will need to create the associated mail forwarding rule so the correct mail gets directed into the mailbox for collection.

We will take the example mail address of peter@mydomain.co.uk, for this address we will create mail forwarding.

Firstly a mailbox will need to be created. This can be done by logging in to the Gradwell hosting control panel and clicking on ‘Email’, then on 'POP3/IMAP mailboxes'.

Once you are in this section choose, from the drop down box, which domain you wish to transfer the mailbox on to and enter a username and password.

The username will be the first part before the @ so in this case the username will be Peter, and the password will be a password of your choosing. Now click on activate mailbox on domain. This will create the actual mailbox.

Now you need to create a mail forwarding rule to direct the mail into this new mailbox, to do this click Email Forwarding, then add forwarding.

Choose from the drop down box the domain you wish to create a rule for and then in local user/alias enter the first part of the email address you wish, in this case this will be peter. In the box below, Destination Address, enter the mailbox name in the format of name@pop3 so again in our example this will be peter@pop3.
Once you have done this you can choose if you wish to use mail filtering and/or anti virus. Once you have finalised the details, click 'Add mail forwarding to domain'.

Once the mail tables rebuild, which normally takes up to an hour, this new email address will be ready to use with either a mail client such as Microsoft Outlook or Thunderbird, or using the Gradwell webmail system.

Advanced settings and troubleshooting

If you already have an existing email address, but would like to create an address for your new domain that simply redirects, this is also possible.

Click on Email Forwarding, now you have made the initial address the screen will have changed a little. You simply need to click on edit and then add additional rule.

For the user, this again will be the first part of the email address but in destination address enter your existing address. For example if you wanted kevin@yourdomain.co.uk to go to a btinternet address, you would be Kevin and your destination address would be kevin@btinternet.com.

For multiple destinations from the same email address, simply separate the destination address by a comma - for example keving@btinternet.com,peter@pop3.

This would send a copy of any email sent to kevin@yourdomain.co.uk to both kevin@btinternet.com and peter@yourdomain.co.uk.
